Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, and ask who carries the cost.
A falsehood dressed in convincing clothes resembles the painted road survey that sends a cart toward a broken crossing, except the damage is harder to inspect, because the track exists first in the mind. A deepfake Tom Cruise condemning the Paris Olympics and a false account of an attack near the Ukraine-Poland border do not need to agree with one another to do their work; they only need to make the ground uncertain beneath whoever is trying to judge what happened.
And uncertainty has a cost, though it does not arrive with a receipt. Division makes neighbours poor witnesses to one another, despair makes every warning sound like another trick, and the honest ledger begins to look no more useful than a forged one. Who pays for it? Who carries it? Not the maker of every tale, perhaps, but the traveller who cannot tell whether the bridge is broken until the wheel is already through.
This is an old shape in a new mask, the grand promise that a picture, a voice, or a confident story can spare us the dull labour of checking hinges and road stones. I cannot tell from this report which falsehoods persuade whom, or for how long. But a realm that loses the habit of distinguishing a warning from a performance will spend its stores repairing accidents that began as small neglected errands.
Not yet.
