There is a ledger under all of this. This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

The question, put plainly: whether the dragons came back on purpose. I think the plain answer is the true one, and everybody has talked themselves past it.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

The cheapest hour is the one you did not waste.
