An 11-year-old boy who was allegedly shot at a unit in Norwest, in Sydney’s north-west, earlier this week has died from his injuries — police said he had been found at the unit on Monday with a gunshot wound and had remained in a critical condition at Westmead children’s hospital until he died at about 8pm on Thursday.
The detail that is easy to miss is that the report does not describe a death at the scene, or even immediately after the shooting — it describes three days in hospital, between the discovery of the injury and the death, with the boy still in a critical condition throughout that time. The headline is more specific, saying he was shot in the face and neck, while the body of the report itself says only “a gunshot wound”, so that particular detail comes from the headline rather than the account beneath it.
There is little else here, and that sparseness makes the event feel all the harsher — a child, a home, an alleged shooting, and a family left with the long interval in which a critical condition can still seem to leave room for hope. I know something of how people speak about hard luck, as though it were a weather system that simply passed over them, but this is not a failed harvest or a bad season — the report gives us only the injury and its ending, without explaining how it happened or who was responsible.
