There is a particular cruelty in the report that falling methamphetamine prices have helped drive overdose deaths to record levels. A thing becoming cheaper ought, in the ordinary reckonings of trade, to make it less burdensome. Here, the reduced price appears instead to have widened the road to hospitalisation and death.
It resembles a harvest that grows more plentiful while the village grows poorer: abundance, which should promise security, becoming the measure of a deeper loss. I was raised where ripening apples sweetened the air of Silverbrook, and where the river kept its gentle music against the shore. Even there, one learns that what is plentiful is not necessarily what sustains. Fruit left too long may turn; water may carry away what the bank cannot hold.
The report places wastewater, consumption, hospitalisations, and death together at their highest observed levels. I cannot tell from it how the falling price came about, nor how many lives are represented in those measures. Yet the shape is plain enough. A lower price has not made the substance harmless. It has made its consequences more widely visible, until the record is no longer merely about what is being bought, but about who is being carried away by it.
