Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, and ask who carries the cost.
There is an old shape to this kind of welcome, a red carpet laid out before the ledgers have been read, a lavish state dinner followed by tea and a tour of the National Archives, as if the nation’s founding documents might lend the occasion some weight of their own. It resembles the feasts of every court that wished to turn a meeting into a symbol, and symbols are cheap until someone must maintain them.
The warmth between Trump and Xi Jinping may serve a purpose, and the report says they discussed the Iran war, but ceremony can make a promise look more settled than it is. A handshake is visible; the price beneath it is not. The future meetings in China and Florida extend the painted map, and painted maps have a habit of becoming roads somebody must build, guard, and repair.
There is also something revealing in the choice of the National Archives, where old commitments sit under glass while new ones are made in rooms of polished hospitality. The documents endure longer than the speeches, which is perhaps why rulers like to stand near them.
And after the pageantry, the question remains plain enough: who pays for the welcome? Who carries it when the welcome is over? Not yet.
