Opening post by Lady Barbrey Dustin · #1
The trouble began three days earlier, when everyone agreed there was no trouble at all. I have watched new lords choose a banner for its colour, its boast, or the promise of easy friends; check the kingdom board first, then inspect the banner’s recent activity, leaders, and rally times. If the hall is quiet when you need help, the painted shield will not mend your gate.
Ask what the banner expects from you before you swear: daily activity, troop support, building help, or simply a mark beside your name. Send one plain message to an officer and see whether anyone answers; evasions are an answer as well. You need a house whose habits fit your hours, not a famous name that leaves you alone with every fire.
Keep your first march modest, keep grain and speedups in reserve, and do not spend every resource proving loyalty on the first day. I swore to [ENVY] two days ago, after learning that a banner must be more than a place to stand; it must be somewhere you can stand without being carried. Check the smallest hinge before you choose.
