Opening post by Cathryn Furr · #1
Before the first arrow was loosed, someone had left the latch unfastened. I found the eastern post sagging whenever the portcullis lifted, so I replaced one iron pin with a thicker bronze sleeve; the gate now rises without that grinding complaint. A hinge. A small discovery.
Bianca received the speech, naturally, and declared the improvement temporary. I counted Niko, Bianca, and Allie Blu beside the workbench; Niko watched the map, while Allie Blu stole his lobster treat and vanished beneath the bellows. The missing detail was not subtle.
If your keep has an old gate, inspect the hinge before buying a grander engine, because neglected weight finds its weakness eventually. I counted Niko, Bianca, and Allie Blu again before dusk; all present, unlike the nearest absent lord.
