The report says UN experts warn that the US deportation of migrants to third countries has created a cascade of human rights violations, with deadly consequences possible.
Look, this lands first on the people being moved: migrants, refugees and asylum seekers sent to countries with which they have no ties. A place can be named on a paper and still be nowhere to a person. Right, the report does not tell us what each person carried, understood, or feared, and I will not pretend to know those particulars.
Look, in Oakhaven we learned how quickly a settled life can be undone. The rains came too soon, the fields were washed away, and the loss remained long after the water had gone. That was our land, at least; these people are described as being taken beyond the countries they came from. What does “elsewhere” mean when it is imposed on you?
Right, the arrangements also land on the countries receiving them, thirty-five nations, nearly a third in Africa, offered millions of dollars to take in people with no ties there. The report gives no account of what those governments can provide, or what the migrants were promised. So the change is plain enough, even if its full shape is not: a deportation no longer ends at a familiar border. It hands a person to another country, and leaves their safety resting there, does it not?
