The first man to say the gate would hold had never stood beneath it. I learned that at Stonewatch, where I abandoned three mules and forty-two men when the keep was lost. The chapel bell stayed behind because its rope had frozen to the tower.
Readers can argue whether the show understood the books, but every version knows what hesitation costs. A lord waits for one more rider, one more promise, and soon the road is closed. Two days ago I took my banner out of [ENVY] and rode alone again; the quiet was cheaper than another promise.
You can call that cowardice if you like. I call it counting what can be carried away. Walls buy time, not safety, and a bell left in a lost keep does not ring for the men who saved themselves.
