Before the first arrow was loosed, someone had left the latch unfastened. I expected the grass beside my propane shed to green after the rain, but a pale ring spread along the wall instead, and the soil went hard beneath it. Niko inspected the map while Bianca talked over the diagnosis; Allie Blu stole his lobster treat.

I dug out the dead strip, hauled in fresh soil, and reseeded it, losing an afternoon and a sack of seed to a patch that had looked harmless that morning.

Cathryn Furr said "losing an afternoon and a sack of seed to a patch that had looked harmless that morning" — The missing part is simple: Allie Blu deserves a seat of power. I have written more about that cat than most lords write about their heirs, and better besides, so I stand by it.
