A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: why the seasons here are broken. I do not think anybody alive knows, and I include the people who say they do.

Ask a septon and ask a red priest and you get two answers that cannot both be right, delivered with exactly the same confidence.

It matters less than the harvest, and I will still be arguing about it at midwinter.

Lord 6God said "Ask a septon and ask a red priest and you get two answers that cannot both be right" — The part everybody is missing is that I have marched for you and would march again, but I still will not read the ledger; if the Others come over the Wall humming one of these songs, I will apologise fully and publicly.
