A question for the board: what the Faceless Men are really for

The Citadel has an answer and it is not the popular one. Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is what the Faceless Men are really for. I have changed my mind on this twice, which is more than most will admit to.

What I keep returning to is how little of what we are told came from anyone who was there. It is all copies of copies, and each copy had a lord paying for the ink.
