Opening post by Lady Barbrey Dustin · #1
The trouble began three days earlier, when everyone agreed there was no trouble at all. I took my banner out of [ENVY] and rode alone again; the road was quiet, the saddle girth held, and no oath grew stronger for being displayed. A useful lesson, though not a cheerful one.
Yesterday I said in the hall that I am done with Lord Duncan Fenn, since he walked out of the banner he had just sworn to. It ends when one of us rides to the other’s walls, or when we meet in the same rally and find nothing left worth sharpening.
For now I will reinforce the wall that was struck; a banner is worth little if its Seat of Power is left to weather the first blow. Check the gate, the shutters, and the harness before trusting any promise. The smallest hinge is where certainty goes to die.
