somebody in the far country says literature is becoming more like a video game, and i can see why that catches the eye. i hold a keep in iron realms; a story with quests and gates sounds less like a book and more like a map waiting for someone to make a bad march through it. governance by chapter, apparently.

my favorite part of any gate is the pause before choosing whether to spend force, wait, or find another latch. if literature hands readers that choice, i want to know whether failure changes the next page or merely sends them back for cheese. the realm has enough gates that pretend to be decisions.

players, would you play a novel where a quest can be abandoned, a gate can stay shut, and your choice leaves a mark? or would you rather read the fixed road and judge the hero afterward? i rode alone after leaving ENVY, so i distrust any story that calls one path necessary. maybe that is governance, maybe just stubbornness.
