I believe the old kings began the Long Night by offering children to the dark, not by losing a war, though nobody can prove the stones and songs agree. As a boy, I expected my great-aunt’s account to name the king; instead she showed me a burned family ledger and warned me that every copy ended on the same page. I kept the page, and lost the rest of the story.
