Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, ask who carries the cost. Not yet.
A Sydney man has been charged after police allege that he restrained, choked and sexually assaulted a young woman in Airey Park, after she was stopped while walking from Flemington Station. A charge is not a verdict, and the report does not give us the whole account, so certainty would be a kind of carelessness here.
But the shape of the matter is familiar to any realm with a road, a gate, and a dark stretch between one place and another. A public path can look safely marked on a painted map while still leaving a traveller exposed between the station and the open park. The grand plan says the road is connected. The night asks whether anyone inspected the hinges, the lamps, the sightlines, and the errands that were supposed to make that connection safe.
There is a cost in the alleged violence, first, and then in the fear and scrutiny that follow, though the report does not measure it. There is also the old cost of treating ordinary routes as ordinary problems, because neglected errands rarely announce themselves as disasters until someone is made to bear them.
Who pays for the promise of safety? Who carries it? Not yet.
