Let it be recorded that the heart, though smaller than a fist, has ruined armies more efficiently than winter, and after Jericho I keep wondering whether mercy means rebuilding what an enemy can break again. I counted all twenty-three bombs; arithmetic did not tell me what kindness costs.
I would spare the well before the gates, but should a lord repair the walls first when the town is still thirsty, or is that merely stone pretending to be mercy?
