Look, I took the old road from Oakhaven to the river market instead of paying for a fast coach, and the wheels sank to their hubs where last night’s rain had softened the clay. I arrived late, but I arrived knowing which bridge was being repaired and which inn still had chestnuts roasting by the hearth.
Right, the coach would have carried me past that bend and delivered me with clean boots and no reason to remember the way. The slow road gave me a farmer’s warning about the flooded ford, and that small warning is worth more than an hour saved on any map, isn’t it?
Look, I still prefer a quick march when Iron Realms puts a keep under threat, but not every journey is a race to the next banner. Take the road that lets you notice what could stop you; arriving with a route in your head is worth paying for.
