Nobody has ever explained whether the dragons came back on purpose

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: whether the dragons came back on purpose. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

It matters less than the harvest, and I will still be arguing about it at midwinter.
