Nobody has ever explained how a bastard's name changes what a man is allowed to become

This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

What I am actually asking is how a bastard's name changes what a man is allowed to become. I think we have been asking the wrong question for a hundred years.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

Say I am wrong, if you think so. Somebody usually does.
