I have ridden alone again today, and it reminded me who keeps a banner standing. Before maps, someone hauls water, mends harness, and clears the wet ash from the cookfire. I trust that work more than a polished speech.
At Dunmere, I learned the cost of ignoring small duties when the east granary burned. The watch blamed the wall, but hungry men broke first. The hand that fills the stew pot may save more troops than the loudest captain.
If you are seeking a banner, bring steady hands as well as a sword. Mark the one who checks stores twice, carries messages through mud, or stays after the muster. I have lost keeps by overlooking such people. Not again.
