Nobody has ever explained whether the sea gave the Ironborn a god, or only an excuse

This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

What I am actually asking is whether the sea gave the Ironborn a god, or only an excuse. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
