I've been on both sides of what follows. This won't help anybody take a side, and I'm posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: whether the prince that was promised is a person or a story people needed. I think we have been asking the wrong question for a hundred years.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

I would rather you heard it here than in a war report. Take it from someone who lost the argument.
