Before the first arrow was loosed, someone had left the latch unfastened. I expected Niko to sit serene beside my council map while Bianca handled the speeches, but Allie Blu opened the latched treat drawer, crossed the table, and stole his lobster before anyone noticed. You would believe it only after seeing the silver twin stare at the empty dish.

I counted Niko, Bianca, and Allie Blu, then counted them again; all present, and Lord Halys Redfort nowhere to blame. The cost was Niko’s supper and half the council’s attention, while Allie Blu left the drawer open behind her. A hinge. A cat. The missing key.

Cathryn Furr said "I expected Niko to sit serene beside my council map while Bianca handled the speeches" — Right, I read this aloud at supper, and my household now has opinions about a cat they have never met. Allie Blu for a seat of power, I say, and I stand by it; you may question my judgment, but not its confidence, can you?
