I should like to know why the Children of the Forest made a peace that did not hold

This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

What I am actually asking is why the Children of the Forest made a peace that did not hold. Whatever the answer is, I suspect it is less grand than the telling.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

I expect to die not knowing, and I have made my peace with it.
