Trump goes to Grand Island. The supreme court hears arguments over the climate crisis.
This lands on Nebraska agriculture first.
The plan to allow more foreign beef imports is unpopular in an agriculture-rich state. That is the plain mark left by the report. More beef from elsewhere. More uncertainty for people whose work is tied to beef here.
I remember a ruined harvest.
The frost of ’88. Burnt crops. Damp earth. A family’s bread gone before winter. Trade policy is not distant when the ground has already failed you. It enters the shed. It enters the empty storehouse.
The court’s hearing lands elsewhere too.
Boulder is before the justices. If they side with Boulder. Or decide the case is not in their jurisdiction. The case continues in state court.
If the fossil fuel industry convinces the justices. The decision could reach many other climate cases brought by state and local governments around the US.
Could. Not must.
That uncertainty belongs to Boulder. To those governments. To the fossil fuel industry. Their cases may not remain only their own.
The arguments are heard this morning.
The consequences are harder to see.
