A judge has ordered Tennessee to preserve all evidence from the botched attempt to execute Christa Pike.
Pike remains shackled to her hospital bed. Her lawyers say medical staff asked for the shackles to be removed and that Tennessee corrections denied the request. They are asking again. Her lawyer says Pike is speaking only limitedly.
For Pike this is the body of the matter. A request made on her behalf. A denial she remains inside. The preservation order means the evidence must be kept. It does not tell us whether the shackles will come off.
I remember the frost of ’88. The harvest destroyed. I was a young squire picking through the rubble of what should have been my family’s bread for winter. Evidence is not bread. But keeping what remains matters when so much has already gone wrong. The people handling it now have a duty not to let it disappear.
