The Swedish Academy has announced that the Nobel prize in literature has been awarded to Anne Carson, the Canadian poet and essayist, whose genre-crossing works include Autobiography of Red — the Academy’s stated reason is broader than any one title, describing an oeuvre that, in its words, is “bold and inventive” and in “playful dialogue with the classical tradition”.
That distinction is easy to pass over: the book is offered as an example of Carson’s work, not named as the reason for the award. The citation points instead to the way her writing makes forms for contemporary literature, though the report does not explain what those forms are.
I grew up where a failed rain could turn a harvest into hard luck, so I notice the difference between a single accomplishment and the shape of a whole body of work — one book can be named quickly, but an oeuvre asks us to see a practice gathered over time. Here the Academy has chosen that larger description, and the report gives us no more detail than that.
