A homecoming is not always the end of a hardship. The carrier’s return after 260 days at sea has the shape of a long-awaited arrival, families gathered at the port, its deck dressed for the occasion. Yet the report also says the deployment led to a mental health crisis. Those two truths sit uneasily together: welcome and distress, relief and whatever remains after the welcome has been given.
I think of the river at Silverbrook, whose sound was a comfort in my childhood, and how a familiar shore can seem to promise that all is well. But a shore cannot know what a traveller carries back with them. Nor can ceremony make a long absence small.
There is something of a lord’s household in this, though the scale is beyond any household I have known: people wait, the absent return, and joy has to make room for the cost of their absence. I cannot tell from this account what follows for the crew. I can only notice that arriving home is an event; being made whole is another matter.
