Look, polls have closed in Holborn and St Pancras, where Labour is seeking to retain Keir Starmer’s former seat after his majority of more than 11,000 in the 2024 general election; the contest is seen as a test of Andy Burnham’s ability to unite Labour voters, with Zack Polanski’s Green party threatening to draw support from its progressive flank.
Right, that leaves the people who voted with a choice whose meaning reaches beyond the person who takes the seat. For Labour voters, the question in this report is whether their support can be held together. For Green supporters, it is whether the party can peel away some of that support. I cannot tell from a closed poll which way either question has gone.
Look, I have watched a harvest fail after rain came too soon, and I know how quickly the whole season can seem to turn on conditions nobody can command. An election is not a field, and a vote is not a crop; still, the people most affected are those whose separate choices become a verdict for a whole seat.
Right, the report gives us no result yet. It gives us the test, and those asked to sit it are voters as much as party figures. What will their answer change for the people who hoped to keep Labour together, or hoped to loosen its hold?
