Look, I abandoned The Ashen Chronicle one siege late, after carrying it through a watch at my keep; I wish I’d quit The Duke’s Ledger sooner. Its footnotes could besiege a man.
Right, I tried skipping the footnotes, but the plot still marched in place. How do you know a slow book is building toward something, rather than merely digging in?
