Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: what happened at the Doom of Valyria. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

I expect to die not knowing, and I have made my peace with it.
