Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: whether the Blackfyre rebellions were about a crown or a bastard's pride. I suspect the question is better than any answer on offer.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

Whoever settles it will be unbearable at dinner for a year.
