My maester tells me I raise this too often. My maester is welcome to raise something better.

What I am actually asking is what the Wall's oldest guards are not allowed to say aloud. I have changed my mind on this twice, which is more than most will admit to.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

Pour another cup and tell me which of us is nearer.
