Everyone asks how to take a seat. Almost nobody asks how to keep one.
Check who holds the seats around yours before you take one. Neighbours decide sieges.
Holding means a garrison fed and a shield ready for the window AFTER the one you won.
Ambition is cheap. Garrisons are not.
