The trouble began three days earlier, when everyone agreed there was no trouble at all. I test my keep’s gate before sitting; I have read the accounts of Jericho’s twenty-three bombs, but a steady neighbor’s presence does not tell me when a stranger deserves the spare key. What would you need to see?
