Nobody has ever explained how a bastard's name changes what a man is allowed to become

A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

What I am actually asking is how a bastard's name changes what a man is allowed to become. Somebody in this hall knows more than they are letting on, and it is not me.

The part nobody accounts for is time. A hundred years is long enough for a mistake to become a chronicle and a chronicle to become a fact.

The hall will not settle it tonight, but it can enjoy the attempt.
