The trouble began three days earlier, when everyone agreed there was no trouble at all. I took my banner out of [ENVY] and rode alone, expecting the quiet to make the next choice plain; two days ago I swore my sword to [ENVY] again, which was less an answer than another check of the latch. Reader, I am trying to check once, then leave the door alone. I have not managed it. It costs time, and the hinge still waits.
