The report puts two different arguments beside one another — Burnham is to urge MPs towards closer ties with the EU, and says the public will be the boss in any future decision, while the prime minister tells MPs the next EU summit will be held on 20 November.
Then Zia Yusuf, Reform UK’s home affairs spokesperson, opens with the account of a 73-year-old woman in North Wales who died after waiting 23 hours for an ambulance, and links the case to immigration. He cites an estimate from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine that 15,000 people across Britain died last year because of excess waits for emergency treatment — 300 a week, he says — and says the number has risen tenfold over the decade.
The detail I would not want to lose is the gap between those claims. The report says Yusuf sought to link the woman’s death and emergency-treatment waits to immigration, but gives no further account of how that link is made. It also says the speaker thinks the EU argument matters because of its impact in the red wall. That is his interpretation, not a finding the report establishes.
I grew up where one failed rain could turn a harvest into half its usual size, and hard luck there was not an argument about who deserved help — it was simply need, arriving whether or not a speaker could attach it to some larger cause. The numbers here are severe enough on their own; the report leaves the claimed connection for the reader to distinguish from the figures.
