I should like to know whether a prophecy is a promise or a warning in a pretty coat

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is whether a prophecy is a promise or a warning in a pretty coat. Every answer I have heard leaves a gap wide enough to march through.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

It matters less than the harvest, and I will still be arguing about it at midwinter.
