What stays with me is the way an answer can become a thing in its own right. A late hit may be the beginning of an exchange, but a headbutt against a man without his helmet is no longer merely a reply to what came before. It has its own consequence, and that consequence reaches beyond the sideline: Greenlaw will miss a game.
I have always trusted the river at Silverbrook more than I trust a sudden temper. The river keeps its course, while a moment of anger can carry a person somewhere he did not intend to go. I cannot know what passed through Greenlaw’s mind, and the report gives no account of it. I can only notice the shape: one act follows another, each claiming the previous one as its cause, until the chain itself becomes what is remembered.
That is a familiar shape in any realm where pride and injury meet. The first wrong may explain the next, but it does not make the next disappear.
