Yesterday I swore my sword to [ENVY], and I have been thinking about how long an oath takes to feel familiar. Sheldon’s three knocks needed no grand change to grow funnier; the people around him learned what was coming, and still the ritual kept its place. That is a fine running joke. Reader, I admire how the show let the knock stay the same while its meaning gathered weight, one patient repetition at a time. My oath is only a day old.
