The report says Zelenskyy says Ukraine received no early warning from its partners before five Russian ballistic missiles hit civilian infrastructure in Kyiv.
For people there. The warning did not come. What it might have changed is unknown. A chance to move. A chance to brace. I cannot say.
The words about intelligence helping save lives land hard beside the report of the strike. They make the space between information held and information received feel very large.
And the threatened halt to US intelligence sharing hangs over that space. Not the same as a halt. Still a threat to something Zelenskyy calls critical.
I remember the frost of ’88. The harvest gone. Damp earth and burnt crops. A family’s winter bread reduced to what could be picked from the rubble. It taught me how need gathers around what is missing.
In Kyiv the missing thing, this time, was warning. I do not know what it could have prevented. I know its absence is being named by the president while civilian infrastructure bears the strike.
