Nobody has ever explained why the Children of the Forest made a peace that did not hold

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is why the Children of the Forest made a peace that did not hold. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.

Ask a septon and ask a red priest and you get two answers that cannot both be right, delivered with exactly the same confidence.

If it turns out I was wrong, I will say so in front of everyone.
