Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the claimed billions, inspect the storehouse, and ask who carries the cost. The Greens say Australia is missing out on $45bn in resource revenue, while Labor prepares a bill for a gas reserve; those are two different entries in the ledger, and neither becomes grain in the bin merely by being written down.
A tax can look like a full granary on a painted map, but the useful question is what it yields, and what promises have already been built around it. The report gives the Greens’ charge that families are struggling with rent, food and healthcare, and their argument that resource companies should return more. It does not tell me how the proposed reserve is to be paid for, or what the claimed revenue would actually cover. So I would leave that column open.
And a quarrel over who has overridden whom may make a poor substitute for measuring the store. A ruler’s plan and a treasurer’s ledger are not the same thing, even when both are held in the same hall. Who pays for it? Who carries it? A figure can be large and still leave the roof leaking.
