The Pentagon says Trump and Hegseth spoke before canceling the livestream of Nidal Hasan’s firing squad execution.
The camera is out of the room.
That is what changed. The report does not say whether the execution itself has changed. A narrow distinction. A heavy one for the people nearest it.
Thirteen people were killed at Fort Hood. Their families are left with the same fact and a different boundary around its telling. They will not see this execution through a government broadcast. Whether they expected to or wanted to is not said here.
Hasan is the person named at the center of the decision. The report gives no account of what the cancellation means to him. The public is also moved back. No live image. No shared hour of watching.
I was a young squire when the frost of ’88 took the harvest. I remember digging among what should have been our bread. Some losses remain present without being put on display. That is not the same as this. It is the measure I have.
The officials who arranged the broadcast now have to explain its absence. The reason given in this report is that Trump and Hegseth were aligned on the decision. Little more is made clear.
