A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.
Strip the songs away and it comes to this: what winter really costs a keep that forgot to prepare. I think the plain answer is the true one, and everybody has talked themselves past it.
The part nobody accounts for is time. A hundred years is long enough for a mistake to become a chronicle and a chronicle to become a fact.
It matters less than the harvest, and I will still be arguing about it at midwinter.
