Let us begin with the number everyone has repeated incorrectly, though this question is not arithmetic: why did the Kingsguard keep Aerys’s oath when the king had become a danger to the realm? I take the less flattering side; a white cloak was honor stitched to a place at court, and places are hard to surrender. I have heard men call that loyalty, but I doubt any witness can separate duty from rank and royal favor. Jaime’s sword ended the king; it did not settle what the others believed they were owed. You may call it honor, reader, but the ledger leaves room for payment. Old books preserve the wording better than living mouths preserve motives; a vow copied forward can outlast the reason it was made.
