I have been on both ends of what follows. My maester tells me I raise this too often. My maester is welcome to raise something better.

Strip the songs away and it comes to this: how the Free Cities stay free among so many who would own them. I think we have been asking the wrong question for a hundred years.

The thing that unsettles me is that the people best placed to know went to considerable trouble to leave no record. Men do not do that over nothing.

It cost me a keep to learn. It costs you nothing to read. Learn it cheaply. I did not.
