Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, ask who carries the message. A press office is a kind of road between the ruler and the people beyond the gate, and a road that may or may not be open is not much comfort to anyone waiting at either end.
What catches me is not only the whirlwind change, but the uncertainty about whether the new keeper of that road will meet travelers at all. In a realm, too, a watch can be changed in haste; the new hand may be capable, but the first question is still who answers when the gate is called. A title can be passed quickly. Confidence cannot be entered into the ledger by the same hand.
There is a cost to silence, and a cost to speaking before the hinges are sound. The report gives no measure of either, and I would not pretend to know which will prove dearer here. But when the frequency of a public duty is itself unsettled, the people outside cannot tell whether they are waiting on a plan or waiting on a person. Who keeps the road? Who carries the cost of leaving it uncertain?
The old lesson is not that every new hand fails. It is that the errand must be named before the stores are counted. Not yet.
